MSOE: Behind the Scenes

  Trimesters??
The Milwuakee School of Engineering is one of a few colleges in THE NATION to operate on a trimester system, which cositst of 3 eleven week semesters of school, and the summer off. All other schools operate on a two semester 14 to 18 week system. The main problem with this is, when you realize that MSOE isn't all it's cracked up to be, you can't transfer. No other schools will accept trimester credits. You basically start over as a Freshman. The trimester system also increases the length of your year. Compare breaks with other colleges too!
The Trimester system also adds another whole semester of Book expense, as well as finals and testing.

  Price??
A Wisconsin state school with engineering, UWM, tuition is around $8,000 dollars a year for an instate student. This is compared to the average MSOE tuition of $23,000 A YEAR! The savings are noticable even with federal aid and scholarships. For example, a current Freshman at MSOE figured that if he could transfer to UWM, he would save $9,000 EACH YEAR! That's including grants, and student loans from Uncle Sam. We feel this difference is not compensated at all by facilities provided at MSOE.

  Grading Scale?
First of all...it sucks. OK, they NEVER tell you this:
Compare these scales:
MSOE
A - 100-93
AB- 92-89
B - 88-85
BC- 84-81
C - 80-77
CD- 76-74
D - 73-70
F - BELOW 70

UWM
A - 100-90
B - 89-80
C - 79-70
D - 69-60
F - 60 and Below
Below 70???? Get real. Compare a 70% At MSOE You are FAILING! At UWM you are average. Seems fair right? A student who had a 3.2 GPA on the MSOE scale would have had a 3.7 at UWM. REDICULOUS!
